I have put a page with a couple patches I wrote. One that fixes the majority of startup problems. Another that significantly reduces lag by loading the sound files to a ramdrive. Take a look if you are interested...http://www.geocities.com/crystalinehome Edited by - crystaline_ on 12/09/2001 14:26:13 |

I posted warnings only because if people try it and do not know what they are doing, they could mess something up. If you are worried, then do not be the first to try it. Like I said, it works for me.

It will work on any windows computer as long as there is enough ram and it is installed properly.

The patch could be edited to be used on 128MB of RAM, but you would would have to decrease the sound quality or not copy all the sound files. Neither of these approaches are very appealing. It took me 6 hours to work the bugs out of this thing so I'm not gonna touch it anymore now that it works. If you want to tweak it though, have fun.

I do not know much about XP, sorry. I know it works on 9x, other than that, I have no idea.

I do not have access to any thing other than win98 right now so I cant debug it on anything else. If anyone knows how to invoke ramdrive.sys on xp, please post.

I know there is a way to use ramdrive.sys on xp because I have seen it done, but I have never done it myself.

BY THE WAY!The server I posted those patches on is a free server and has a very low bandwidth allowance. If it goes over, the page will be blocked out. It comes back up an hour later so be patient. If anyone wants to mirror the download, feel free.

You'll have to do a complete rewrite for Win2k & XP. There is no ramdrive.sys or any equivalent functionality, you'll have to use a third party program for a ramdrive under 2k and I'm sure XP shares the same "problem". No config.sys or autoexec.bat either.Think before you post... |

Is there a way to maybe run win2k or xp over dos?

Just checked both of the d/l's, good job For the suspicious ones, there are no trojans or viruses in them. They're as safe as they can be. Think before you post... |

Nope. Win9x is based on DOS, where as NT, 2k & XP are all based on the NT kernel, which is completely 32-bit unlike DOS (that's one reason win9x is so unstable). Think before you post... |

Hey everybody this is just my way of getting around some lag. I figured if I have 512MB of RAM and I really only need 256MB this would be a good use for the extra. There are other approaches. Whenever I can afford win2k I am sure I will find one. :)

O well, worth asking. I know what you mean about unstable. It is really sad. I have a great computer but I still deal with an OS that crashes all the time :( One of these days I will get win2k... one of these day (of course it might be win2005 by then)

Well I cannot blame people for being suspicious. That is why I run Norton 2002 and Live Update 4 times a day lol. Not to mention my firewalls...

Oh yeh, one thing about Win9x... It don't know how to use more than 512Mb of RAM by default, lol. A ramdrive is a good way of putting the unused memory to use.Think before you post... |

Its too bad they never updated ramdrive to use more than 32mb though. It would have been a lot easier than making 7 ramdrives lol

Loads of hassle with the ramdrive thing, for instance. Good instructions. Think before you post... |

actually an even better upgrade would be to allow more than 63 files on a drive. that was the biggest obstacle
